In-Depth Look at GB/T 12754-2019: A Key Standard for High-Performance PPGI Coil
PPGI Coil is widely used for building roofs, exterior walls and interior decoration. As construction projects require better corrosion resistance, surface quality and service life, the quality of the steel substrate, coating system and production process has become more important for buyers.
GB/T 12754-2019 is a Chinese national standard for color coated steel sheets and strips. It provides technical requirements for the substrate, coating, dimensions and performance of color coated steel products. What Does GB/T 12754-2019 Cover?
PPGI Coil is more than a steel sheet with a layer of paint on the surface. Its performance depends on the complete coating structure.
A typical PPGI Coil has the following structure from the outside to the inside:
Top Coat → Primer → Pretreatment Layer → Zinc or Zinc-Aluminum Coating → Cold-Rolled Steel Substrate
The cold-rolled steel substrate provides the basic strength and forming performance. The metallic coating helps protect the steel from corrosion. The primer and top coat provide additional surface protection as well as the required color and appearance.
For this reason, surface color alone is not enough when evaluating a PPGI Coil.
Steel Substrate Affects the Basic Performance
PPGI Coil can use cold-rolled steel substrates such as DX51D and DX52D. Different substrate grades offer different forming and processing properties and can be selected according to the requirements of the final application.
For products that need cutting, bending or forming, yield strength, elongation and surface quality are important factors.
For some PPGI products, the yield strength can be above 300 MPa, with elongation of 20% or more, providing suitable mechanical performance for a range of construction applications.
Coating System and Corrosion Resistance
PPGI Coil can be produced with different paint systems, including PE, HDP and PVDF.
PE coating is commonly used for general construction and decorative applications, offering a practical balance between cost and performance. HDP coating provides improved weather resistance for projects with higher requirements. PVDF coating is often selected for buildings where long-term weather resistance and surface performance are important.
The coating system works together with the steel substrate and metallic coating. Pretreatment, primer and top coat form a complete protection system for the steel.
Corrosion resistance can be evaluated through neutral salt spray testing. Some PPGI products can achieve more than 2,500 hours in salt spray tests. Actual service life depends on the working environment, processing, installation and maintenance conditions.
More Than Plain Colors: Printed PPGI Coil
Traditional color coated steel coils are often supplied in standard colors such as white, gray and blue. Today, many building projects require more choices in surface appearance.
Printing technology allows PPGI Coil to be produced with wood grain, grid, brick and stone patterns.

Confirm whether the substrate is galvanized or zinc-aluminum coated and check the required coating weight.

Choose PE, HDP or PVDF according to the application and expected service conditions.
4. Paint Thickness and Surface Quality
Confirm the top coat, primer, color, gloss and overall surface condition.
